ABCKids 1 : Alphabet and Numbers HD for iPad on the iTunes App Store.

ABCKids 1 is a nicely designed beginner app that introduces the alphabet and numbers. This app is normally $0.99, but it is available for free download for a limited time. This app is well worth the paid app price.

I really like the wooden puzzle motif which lends a bit of naturalness to the app. There are eight activities in the app. There is a flashcard activity which introduces the letters and numbers with animals and spelling. There are also toddler friendly puzzles, memory and shape recognition activities for the alphabet and numbers.

Recommended for ages 18 months to 3 years.

App Store – Car Crusher.

Car Crusher app is an interesting and fun twist in the puzzle app genre. This app is designed for the iPhone and iPad and is currently free for download. Normally, this app is $0.99.

The goal of the game is to arrange the various tools (magnets, conveyors, fans, beams, etc.) in the factory to get the car into the crushing machine while avoiding hazards like dynamite. It is a pretty engaging game with 64 levels of play of increasing difficulty. It does a pretty good job of sharpening reasoning, logic, sequencing and spatial skills.

Recommended for ages 7 and up. Younger children can play the game, but they will have difficulty in solving the puzzles. They will enjoy just moving the different tools around and watching the cars bounce around in the factory.

App Store – Cars in sandbox: Construction.

Just came across this nifty construction vehicle app recently for the iPhone and iPad which is currently being featured for free download (originally priced at $3.99).

Beautifully animated and highly realistic fully functional construction vehicles in a virtual sandbox. Your little one can explore the way each vehicle operates and complete the mission for each vehicle. No need for written instructions since sketches of the mission objectives are pinned to the sides of the sandbox. Your LO will earn stars for each mission objective completed. Each vehicle varies in the number of objectives that need to be completed and difficulty level.

There are definitely levels where parental assistance is required to assist younger children in completing the mission. However, if your little one is happy to manipulate the vehicle and the various toys in the sandbox, then there is plenty to keep them busy exploring. This app will reinforce cause and effect understanding, hand and eye coordination, and sequencing skills.

Recommended for 2 and up. Grab this app deal while it lasts!
