Guess How Much I Love You – Interactive Episodes for iPad on the iTunes App Store.

Our family loves the classic Guess How Much I Love You story by Sam McBratney. This is a lovely story about the love between a father and his son. I love the playfulness of the story, and the fact that it is about a father. For some reason, children’s stories seem to often feature only the mother and children with the father frequently missing. Anyways, I can easily recite this from memory due to the many, many readings to my son. I always decided to have M’s aunt record this story in the Hallmark recordable book so that he could listen to her read the story. (This is a wonderful way of keeping far away loved ones near and present for young children). Even though you can do this easily with many e-books…

Leo’s Pad goes free today only! July 18, 2013

Leo’s Pad Appisode 1 for iPad on the iTunes App Store.

Leo’s Pad is a fabulous iPad app for preschoolers developed by Kidaptiv, a start up featuring a group of Stanford education experts, award winning animation artists, and an Emmy winning creative director. This group has raised the bar with this appisode and this entry is on par with the high quality interactive apps that have been produced by Disney and Nickelodeon. This is definitely not just another storybook app.

You will absolutely love the high quality graphics and animation. The compelling story with seamlessly integrated exploratory activities that are intended to help build key preschool skills like shapes, colors, number sense, drawing, letter identification, and puzzle solving. I like that you can track your child’s progress in the Parents only section.

This is a very intriguing offering in a planned series of apps that will be priced at $2.99. Appisode 1: Gally’s Birthday introduces Galileo and explores his dream of flying to the stars. Future apps will feature other child-friendly versions of key historical figures like Marie Curie. So, grab this amazing app while it is still free. Appisode 2: Rocket to the Stars will be released in January 2013.

Highly recommended for ages 3 to 5. Do not miss out on this one!

Updated  7/18/13:
As predicted, in my review, this app has gone on to win numerous award for their groundbreaking, inventive apps. Since my review, they have gone on to produce a total of 4 appisodes (Gally’s Birthday, Rocket to the Stars, Catch that Question, A Splashing Good Time) for Leo’s Pad. A Splashing Good Time introduces a new character named Fusch which is loosely based on Confucius. I really am a fan of adaptive learning apps which I think if developers aren’t headed already in that direction, they will be left behind in the educational app market as the bar has definitely been set higher.
They also since released Leo’s Cardmaker, Leo’s Colors and Leo’s Songs which are all currently free.  If you have a older version, you must unlock appisode 2 as an in-app purchase inside Leo’s Pad which is $2.99 unless you like via Facebook and invite 18 FB friends to try the app out. Then you can update the app and get #3 & #4 unlocked.

Summer Camps

Summer Camp

Since Apple has summer camps, it looks like Microsoft is rolling out their own set of free camps for movie making and game development. Register early as space if limited. Unlike Apple, it looks like Microsoft has online registration and a calendar.

For kids 8 to 12.

ABC Wildlife for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store.

This is a highly rated popular app that has gone free for just one day. (Normally, $2.99) I only just noticed right now that it is free, so I am not sure how many hours are left for this. Even though M has long since mastered the alphabet, he still enjoys playing with this app which combines the alphabet with animals, interactive games and videos. Children are also introduced to vocabulary and spelling with this app. This is great fun for any child that enjoys animals.

Recommended for ages 2 to 5.
