Happi & The Word Thief for iPad on the iTunes App Store.

This is a pretty fun spelling adventure game for kids 5 to 9 that has gone free! This app is normally $2.99. You have to try to find all the hidden words before the Word Thief finds and steals them. Find the words and rescue words from the Word Thief to earn your detective’s badge. This app has three levels of difficulty. It also adapts to your child’s mastery of words and will increase the challenge accordingly.

Spelling is often a tedious language arts skill to drill and learn for young kids. This app is a pretty good way to makes spelling practice a lot more fun.

Recommended for ages 5 to 9. It can be used with younger gifted learners as well.

Life at Warp Speed

Auracle HD – Fruits for Little Lamb for iPad on the iTunes App Store.

This is a really lovely story app for the iPad from Auryn Books that is adapted from Leslie Ann Clark’s devotional book by the same name. This book teaches young children about the fruits of the Spirit in such a gentle and heartwarming way. This app is free for download today. Normally, it is $1.99.

My most favorite feature of the app is the ability to personalize the audio. This is a wonderful inexpensive alternative to the more expensive hard copy recordable books for children.

Highly recommended for children 2 to 6.

18 Reasons Why Doctors and Lawyers Homeschool Their Children March 26, 2013

18 Reasons Why Doctors and Lawyers Homeschool Their Children — ChildrensMD.

A lot of people wonder why my family is a homeschooling family. I am a Berkeley educated CPA who walked away from my consulting practice to be a SAHM that homeschools her child. I love this article written by a pediatrician in St. Louis that articulates many of the reasons why we homeschool.
We love the relaxed pace of life. The time together every evening enjoying each other’s company is awesome instead of rushing around trying to get ready for the next day or fighting to get the homework done when it is the worse part of the day for a cranky, tired child. That is only followed up with rushing around in the morning trying to get everyone dressed and out the door on time. Somehow, we have come to a place in our society where we have accepted that normal life is supposed to be scheduled and rushed. Does life really have to be that way? I love that my child is growing up to have a childhood that is relaxed with plenty of time and space for creative play and for his imagination to soar. I love that learning is woven in through our family life, and that I have time to linger over lunch yesterday with my 4.5 yo kid who wanted to talk about animals, and which ones were diurnal and nocturnal.
I never grew up thinking that this is what we would be doing, but this is the best version of family life that I could have imagined for our family. Chances are that you know someone that homeschools. There are over 2 million kids that are being homeschooled. Honestly, that means there are over 2 million different ways that we are going about doing it. How about that for an individualized educational plan?
We don’t do it because it is an easy road to take. We do it because it really is the choice that makes the most sense for our family.

(A non-granola, non-hippie, non-baking my own bread, non-sewing my own clothes, non-attachment parent, non-media banning parent, non-survivialist, non-religious right, non-living on the land, non-sheltering my kid from all influence type of homeschooler.)

Little Things® for iPad on the iTunes App Store.

Little Things® Forever for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad on the iTunes App Store.

Who didn’t love those I Spy books or those Hidden Picture Puzzles in Highlights Magazine when you were growing up? I suppose it isn’t a very well kept secret that I thoroughly enjoyed reading and playing with those I Spy books with my nieces.

Klicktock is the developer of the best selling, award winning  Little Things App and  Little Things Forever for the iPhone and iPad. In honor of this, they are offering Little Things Forever free for a limited time. Normally $2.99. This is an awesome grab!

I love how this app offers up a different game every time you play which is refreshing when most puzzle apps for young children a fairly repetitive. You solve each hidden picture puzzle and earn puzzle pieces to collect to solve when you collect enough pieces. When you solve the puzzle, you earn badges. For younger players, the hint feature is really helpful. They darken the screen and highlight a circular area when the hidden object is located. As time passes, the circle grows smaller and smaller so that your child can easily find the hidden object. This is really great for avoiding undue frustration when your child gets stumped. I thought that the puzzle that you collect pieces for a pretty tough for a younger player to solve since you have to rotate, slide, and flip pieces. I had to do a little thinking in order to solve it myself.

This app does a really great job of engaging children with interesting and dynamic puzzle play while really helping them with their observational skills. Highly recommended for ages 3 and up! These apps are well worth the paid app price.

Pokémon TV – free!

Pokémon TV for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation), iPod touch (5th generation) and iPad on the iTunes App Store.

This is not a recommendation for Pokemon or to watch this show since there is plenty of educational entertainment for kids. This is just a fyi that this free app lets you watch Pokemon whenever you like as long as you have an internet connection. This is great for kids who love Pokemon. Hopefully, my son will remain blissfully unaware of Pokemon for the time being and just think that it is something his cousins like to play.
