Bugsy Pre-K – alphabet, numbers, colors, shapes, phonics, and counting for preschool kids for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store.

Bugsy has made their preschool app free for a limited time. This app is normally $2.99. This app covers a range of preschool concepts: colors, shapes, phonics, letters, numbers, counting, and vocabulary. This app supports multiple users, allows you customize which skills to work on, and adjust difficulty level based on your child’s progress. I really like the design of the skill tracking in this app. However, be sure to set up your child as a user before playing since any progress made will not be kept unless the user profile is established. This app uses a reward system to encourage your child’s progress.

Note: As other users have noted the phonics pronunciation does exaggerate the letter sounds, so be aware of that if that is of a concern to you.

Recommended for ages 3 to 5.

Bugsy Kindergarten Math for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store.

This is a pretty cute, user friendly Kindergarten math app from Bugsy. This app costs $2.99 which is a reasonable price for a multi-user math skills app ($1.99 would be fairer pricing in my opinion though). I do think that the Teach Me series that I blogged about here ( is about the best app deals all around.

This app covers: numbers to 30, skip counting, writing numbers, pattern recognition, addition and subtraction up to 20, comparing quantities, and number bonds. I am really pleased to see an early math app that teaches number bonds which is a pictorial representation of an addition fact. This is a concept that heavily used in Singapore Math. Having taught my son with Singapore Math through Primary 1, I can see how learning number bonds really helps students understand addition, subtraction, adjacent number bonds (for example, 7 is 3 and 4, 2 and 5, 1 and 6, 0 and 7), and helps with the concept of re-grouping for more complex sums.

Like the other Bugsy apps, multiple children can use this app. The difficulty level is self-adjusting, and skills to be worked on can be customized. There is also a reward system built in to encourage your child’s progress. The progress screen is extremely helpful to see where your child is in their mastery of specific skills.

Recommended for 4 to 6.
