Old MacDonald HD – by Duck Duck Moose for iPad on the iTunes App Store.

Do not miss out of this fabulous award-winning book app (for iPad and iPhone) geared for toddler from one of my all-time favorite app developers, Duck Duck Moose. This is a highly interactive app with 3 dozen activities designed around this age-old favorite Old MacDonald. The app can be listened to in multiple languages and various musical instruments as well. You can even record your child’s voice. This app is normally $1.99 but is currently available for free download. Duck Duck Moose apps are rarely ever discounted or free.

Duck Duck Moose makes several apps that we really love: Fish School (ABCs, numbers, colors), Park Math (early math) and Word Wagon (early phonics and spelling) which are all well worth the $1.99 paid app price. I highly recommend any of these apps.

Recommended for ages 18 mos and up.

Toybox Racer app – free today! October 2, 2012

Toybox Racer for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store.

Okay, this app doesn’t have spectacular special effects or super awesome graphics, but it more than makes up for it in good clean fun. The problem with a lot of the racing apps out there is that they tend to cater to a more “ahem” mature audience with questionable ads, excessive violence, crude audio commentary, and scantily clad “eye candy.” Not something I want to expose my 4yo’s eyes to quite yet. This app is currently free for today. Normally, it is $0.99 which is well worth the paid app price.

This app is not without some bugs which hopefully will be resolved over time. You get to race a simple soap box derby race car around on a wood track. The game is played with a tilt to play interface and resets the car in the event of a crash. There are a variety of tracks to play. Even better, you can build your own race course. How fun is that!

Recommended for age 3 to 6 strictly for the racing aspect. Younger if your LO is adept at tilt to play interface. Older children can play as well, but they may be bored by the lack of sophistication (i.e. graphics, special FX) in this game, but they will find it quite challenging to build a custom race tracks. I find it charming and refreshing myself.
