Mac App Store – Subtracting Sardines. (iPhone)

This is a really great week for apps especially math apps if you have been following my blog. Read on for more great apps!

Operatio Apps makes a series of award winning apps that are really wonderful in how they introduce and teach addition, subtraction and multiplication in such an engaging and natural manner. Right now, they are featuring Adding Apples app for the iPad and iPhone for free download, and the rest of their apps are discounted 50% to $0.99 for a limited time.

I really love the sharp graphics, the ease of use and the level of interaction that the apps build into the learning process. It is a very clever use of manipulatives to help your child master early math skills. The apps also allow for increasing difficulty. The apps encourage continued engagement through the use of coin awards. I also like that you can have 3 unique users for the app which is great when you are working with more than one child. The addition and subtraction apps are good for ages 3 and up. The multiplication one is good for

I also linked their multi-function Rocket Math HD app which is really a slick, well-developed multi-skill math add with 3 levels of play.  This is a fun, engaging way to practice math skills with the gratification that correct answers mean a successful mission completion. I also really like that a “chalkboard” is linked so that your child can work out the answers on a “workpaper.” This app is designed for the older child and is appropriate for children grade 1 to 5.

Highly recommended! Definitely grab the free app and the others are well worth the money. These apps are great for homeschooling families as well and work well with younger advanced learners. Even better, these apps never have any ads or in-app purchases.

iReading HD – Animal Puzzle World for iPad on the iTunes App Store.

Animal Puzzle World is a pretty cool animal puzzle app for the iPad for kids. It is currently available for free download. Normally it is $0.99 which is well worth the price.

The graphics are pretty cute and visually appealing to young children. The puzzles are suitable for young children since there are plenty of hints and free helps to fill in puzzle pieces. The app is very friendly to young children since the app does not require precise placement of pieces. Each puzzle also include spelling the animal names.

There are over 100 animals featured in this app and organized on a world map so the app also integrates an introduction to basic geography. Once your child solves all the animals in a particular region, they will have successfully completed their album which will then unlock the album’s introductory encyclopedia feature where your child can learn about each animal, characteristics, behaviors, and habits. This is a wonderful introduction to science for young children.

Highly recommended for ages 2 and up. Grab it while it is free!

Color Wall HD for iPad on the iTunes App Store.

Color Wall HD is a very nice coloring app for kids. Normally $1.99, it is currently free for download. You can switch between auto-fill or brush coloring. It is very easy to switch colors, and there are plenty of coloring “pages” to play with. I would skip paying for it as there are plenty of free coloring apps available.

Recommended for ages 18 months and up. Grab it while it is free.

Pocket Dinosaurs 2 HD: Insanely Addictive! for iPad on the iTunes App Store.

Mac App Store – Pocket Dinosaurs 2. (iPhone version)

Pocket Dinosaurs 2 HD Basic for iPad on the iTunes App Store. (free version)

Just found this fun game app called Pocket Dinosaurs 2 HD for iPad (there is an iPhone version available as well.) that is free for download for a limited time. Normally, this game is listed for $4.99 which is grossly overpriced. However, for free, this is a pretty decent entry into the “Angry Birds” genre of games. The goal is to launch as many dinosaurs as you can into the alien spaceship which a little harder as it sounds since the alien spaceship is in motion. If you miss out of getting this for free, there is a free basic version linked above.

Recommended for ages 3 and up. Grab it while it is free.

App Store – SimplePhysics.

Do you have a budding architect or structural engineer in the house? This is a great app for them. SimplePhysics lets you simulate designing and building different structures like tree house. The objective is to build a sound structure at the lowest possible cost. You can get as creative as you like with your structures and the app will simulate the actual physics of your grand design. Blow up your architectural creation or test it using a rag doll dummy.

A fairly realistic way to take building with blocks or Lincoln Logs to the next level for your creative kid or even your inner child.

Recommended for ages 7 and up. App is available for free  download for a limited time. Otherwise, it is normally $1.99. This app has over 500 reviews and is rated 4.5 stars on iTunes.
