App Store – Rocket Speller.

I found this really cool beginning spelling app called Rocket Speller for the iPad and iPhone the other day. M just loves playing with it. The graphics are sharp and attractive. The game is fun and easy to play, and it actually doesn’t feel like learning. You earn rocket parts as you play and get to assemble and launch it.

I like that the app sets four different levels for your child to play.

Level 1 – Place letters in any order. Letter hints given.
Level 2 – Must place letters in order. Letter hints given.
Level 3 – Simple words. Must place letters in order. No hints.
Level 4 – Complex words. Must place letters in order. No hints.

Currently this app is available for free download, however I do not know how long this will be the case. Grab it while it is free!

Highly recommended for ages 3 to 7.

Thomas & Friends App – Free for a limited time!

App Store – Thomas & Friends: Engine Activities.

Thomas & Friends: Activities app for iPhone and iPad is free for download right now for a limited time. Normally $1.99. This app comes with two activity “packs” unlocked. There are coloring pages, puzzles and matching games. However, if you want more activities, you have to buy additional “packs” at $0.99. I would recommend disabling in-app purchases in the settings menu of your iPad to avoid unnecessary frustration for your child or upset from you for any accidental app purchases.

If your child is obsessed with Thomas, this is a pretty decent app. I like that you can set the difficulty level for the puzzles and matching which extends the use of that feature. If you had to pay for this app, I personally think that there are far better apps out there for $1.99. However, you are probably paying a premium for “Thomas.”

However, as a free download, this is a great deal. Grab it while it is still free!

Recommended for ages 2 to 5.
